Airfare has been reduced to Uganda! Right now, the new cost is…

Airfare has been reduced to Uganda! Right now, the new cost is $2027. Make your next great mitzvah in the African Diaspora! You are invited to join other Beth El leaders and congregants this December in working with Uganda’s small but thriving indigenous Jewish community, the Abayudaya. We will be visiting their main village of Nabugoye, located in a verdant mountainous area in eastern Uganda. Brochure

For one rewarding week, we will be working alongside the community in many capacities and celebrating Shabbat with them. You’ll have numerous opportunities to use your skills – anything from cooking to painting to marketing and helping with a business plan. And above all, you will be sharing the spiritual rewards of mitzvah with a Jewish community unlike any other in the world.

On this mission physicians, nurses, midwives and others involved in health care will have a very special opportunity. The Abayudaya community will open its first hospital in June 2010 to address a tremendous need for basic health care in the region. Medical professionals joining the mission would see patients and advise the local medical staff. Pre-travel meetings will connect you with a specialist to discuss specific needs of the community.

Beyond opening the region’s first hospital, the Abayudaya also serve the local area with commerce and education. The health center, the coffee co-op and the Jewish school in Nabugoye include their Christian and Muslim neighbors, fostering good will and cooperation among the communities. Congregants interested in contributing to the school’s classes will be able to work directly with the teachers and children.

Economic development among the Abayudaya is shifting from being donor-reliant to self-sustaining. With guidance from their Ugandan born, U.S.-trained rabbi, Gershom Sizomu (a close friend of Rabbi Olitzky), the Abayudaya have organized a micro-lending fund to start small business enterprises. This community fund is catalyzing entrepreneurial success and creating much-needed jobs. Participants will be able to apply their talents and experiences for a grateful community. We will be working with new entrepreneurs and existing business people in the community, from farmers to small business retailers. Lenders are also welcome!

This is a kid-friendly trip! Our young congregants will work and play with the kids in the Abayudaya community – with activities including leadership training and setting up youth programs. You will start planning together with the kids in Uganda before the trip and create a program to implement when you are there.

This is a trip not to be missed! We would love you to join in and anticipate the trip to fill up soon!

Cost
Airfare – $2027
Mission – $2100

Dates
12/20 – 12/29
with safari – 12/20 – 1/3

Safari!
5 days in Budonga National Forest and Murchison Falls
Now that you are in Africa, you may want to just stay on for a 5 day eco-adventure. You will be taking a boat ride up the Nile at Murchison Falls and seeing crocodiles, hippos and the giant Nile Perch. There will be game drives to see elephants, tree-climbing lions, leopards and giraffes to name a few. We’ll take a hike in the rain forest to see the chimpanzees and there is bird watching everywhere you go. There will be hotel accommodations and we will celebrate Shabbat under the stars.

Safari Add-On- $2500

A $500 deposit per person is needed to sign up for the mission trip. Make checks payable to Beth El Synagogue and note “Ugandan mission” with your check.

For trip details contact: Joanne Trangle via e-mail or by phone at 612-432-4473 and for more information on the Abayudaya, visit kuchangatravel.com.

Don’t let cost deter you from joining in!
Mission Development Chair Jenny Hage has helped secure an arrangement for our group with the Minnesota Twins and Target Field. Should anyone be interested in subsidizing the cost of the trip, we will have an opportunity to work the concessions at a number of Twins games this season, with a percentage of the sales going toward the cost of the trip for those individuals who put in the time. Please contact Jenny Hage directly by e-mail to learn more about this fun, exciting and rewarding opportunity.

Help…

Attend a minyan, pack food, brighten someone’s day, serve a meal…

Help Make a Minyan
It is often difficult in the summer months to get a minyan at the daily services (7:00 a.m. and particularly 5:45 p.m.). Not only is attending a minyan a mitzvah for you, it allows those in mourning to say kaddish. Please help ensure that we are never without a minyan. Come see that your presence truly counts!

Do you have ONE free hour during the week?
Volunteers are needed for 2-4 hours per month for friendly social visits* to members who are unable to attend services and other functions. *No driving, lifting, counseling or healthcare involved. Training will be provided as a two-hour session with a staff member from the Twin Cities Jewish Healing Program and our Shul Nurse, Hadassah Zohara will be available for further educational assistance and support. Your visit can brighten someone’s day and make them feel reconnected to the community of Beth El. If you can help, please contact Hadassah via e-mail or at 952-920-3512 x 7356.

Feed My Starving Children
The next opportunity to pack food (grades 3 and up) is Tuesday, July 13 from 6:00-7:30p.m. in Chanhassen. For more information or to volunteer, please contact Jane Polansky at 952-544-1462 or rbpolansky@yahoo.com.

Loaves & Fishes
The next Loaves and Fishes serving opportunity is Tuesday, July 27. We provide a wonderful meal for people in need in South Minneapolis. Servers volunteer from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Call Diana Rosen at 952-922-7389 to reserve a place on our serving team.

Nearly 150 Beth El congregants along with Jeffrey Jacobs, Mayor of St.…

Nearly 150 Beth El congregants along with Jeffrey Jacobs, Mayor of St. Louis Park and Dr. Bob Tift, President of Benilde-St. Margaret’s gathered last Thursday, August 12, 2010 to witness the historic groundbreaking ceremony – kicking off the long-awaited construction project at Beth El. An air of nostalgia was evident at this festive event complete with music from our Beth El band and Cantors Abrams and Newman as well as historic images assembled by Bonnie Heller of the previous groundbreaking over 40 years ago. The captive crowd heard from Rabbi Davis and President Gary Krupp (“at least for the next two hours”). An exuberant round of applause rose when Capital Campaign Chair and incoming President, Gil Mann announced that mountains of paperwork to prepare for the financing of this much anticipated project had been completed just hours before. With that, honored guests were given golden shovels and the groundbreaking had begun.

Beth El has been a flurry of activity this summer in preparation…

Beth El has been a flurry of activity this summer in preparation for breaking ground. In June, the giant task of moving our offices took place, thanks to the efforts of many volunteers and our staff. Ten semi trailers worth of furnishings and furniture were packed and moved. Our coatroom has become our administrative offices and our summer camp has successfully transitioned to B’nai Emet with their tremendous assistance.

In the last 30 days, competitive bids for every aspect of our construction project have been received and reviewed. A line-by-line review of bids has been conducted by members of our construction committee together with our architects and general contractors. That review is complete…though will be ongoing during construction. Bank financing is nearly complete and actual construction should be underway in a matter of weeks. First phase work will include the Aleph School, handicapped accessibility and our offices. You should see construction workers and equipment on site shortly.

FALL PLANS
On the High Holy Days, the Spiegel Sanctuary, the Gruman Social Hall and Fiterman Chapel will be available for services. Our wonderful neighbors Benilde-St. Margaret’s School are making their facilities available to us at no charge to help us accommodate all of our programming needs. We are enormously grateful for their generous act of brotherhood! Specific information on service times and locations will be found in your High Holy Day mailing arriving next week.

We are also blessed to have developed a wonderful partnership with B’nai Emet. Our summer camp has enjoyed sharing space with the program at B’nai Emet. We are pleased that our Aleph School will continue to use space at B’nai Emet for the first part of the school year.

FUNDRAISING EFFORTS
We are far from complete in reaching all of our members for their support to complete the L’dor Vador Campaign. If you have not yet been contacted, please proactively contact Linda Goldberg via e-mail or 952-920-3512 x7302 to learn more.

HOLD THE DATE
Ceremonial ground breaking on August 12 at 5:30…followed by the Beth El Annual Meeting.

There has been great progress in the last few weeks! The City…

There has been great progress in the last few weeks! The City Council of St. Louis Park has approved our project, we are in the final stages of securing bank construction financing, construction diagrams are all but complete and bidding for the job is beginning. Soon we will officially announce our start date for construction.

If you have not had a chance to view plans that were on display in the Ring Lobby, some of them are featured here with brief explanations of the design.

New Entrance
One of the primary features of the renovation is a new 26th street entrance. This new entrance will be brightly lit and will embody Beth El’s Vision Statement to be warm and welcoming. From this safe and secured entry, one immediately enters the hub of the building that leads to the Aleph School, the administration areas as well as the worship, social spaces and new Library.

Aleph School
The new Aleph School will have seven classrooms as well as new teachers’ and director’s offices – all on one floor! These spaces will be bathed in natural lighting and have upgraded fixtures and carpeting. We also will build to accommodate infant care should we decide to offer this in the future. A new entry to the school will include a parents’ lounge for coffee and programs and will be a wonderful, informal gathering space. This space will also be available for gathering on Shabbat and holidays.

Library
An exciting addition to the east of the building will house our new library and education center. This addition will also feature a new covered main front entry way. The dramatic and beautiful structure will symbolically demonstrate the centrality of ongoing learning in our congregation. The space will include areas for reading to children, use of technology, and ability to have classes and discussions. The addition will also include a reconfiguration of our coat room and will include a quiet room adjacent to the main sanctuary, for children or for classes observing how services are conducted. More green spaces in front of our building will also add beauty to our building.

Accessibility/Way Finding
Finally, Beth El will have an elevator! Wherever needed, ramps will be added for those who can not use stairs. Hallways will be widened, confusing corners eliminated, and sightlines opened up. All of these improvements will allow our members and guests to easily navigate their way through our building and find our facility warm and welcoming.

Gift Shop A new gift shop will be located as one comes into the new 26th street entrance. This is the perfect location to take advantage of foot traffic. New display cases will allow passersby to be enticed by products.

Youth Lounge
The new youth lounge will be on the west side of the building. A designated youth entrance will allow easy access for our kids and enable programs to take place during off hours while keeping the building secure.

Administration
For the first time, all our staff will be located together. The new offices will provide places for all of our staff in one central location, where we will operate more efficiently. Also, waiting areas for visitors will be bright and welcoming.

Meeting Rooms
All of the old Aleph School rooms currently upstairs on the west side of the building (once known as the activities building in the 1960’s) will be used for other programs and activities. Such uses will include: classes, meetings, even alternative smaller minyanim or services on a Shabbat morning.

Parking and Outside Spaces
The main parking area will remain largely untouched by renovations. However, we will have some additional green areas with plantings that will enhance our outdoors spaces.

Building Modernization
The new plan will bring the building up to code by abating asbestos, sprinkling the building, making heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) more energy efficient, and upgrading plumbing, bathrooms, lighting and more.
